Project WET

What is Project WET?
Project WET (Water Education Today) is an international, interdisciplinary water science education program used by a wide range of water users. It helps volunteers and community leaders confidently engage young people in age-appropriate, inquiry-based learning experiences using curriculum guides and activities.

Why is it water education crucial for the next generation?
Teaching youth about water science and sustainable practices helps them see that lakes are not just beautiful places to visit, but vital resources that need protection. The Chesapeake Bay, once a biological dead zone 40 years ago, became its healthiest in 33 years by 2019, thanks in part to a structured aquatic science curriculum for all students in the watershed. Many of these students grew up to pursue resource management careers, support protective policies, and become active stewards.

How does Project WET work in Minnesota?
In Minnesota, an estimated 20,000 people annually engage with Project WET resources through classrooms, community programs, and professional trainings. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MN DNR) administers Project WET, with organization like MLR facilitating by coordinating volunteer trainings, promoting the use of Project WET materials, and integrating water education into broader stewardship and youth engagement efforts.

Bring Project WET to Your Lake Community!
Many lake associations actively conduct youth education as part of their stewardship work. These locally led programs often partner with schools and clubs to host include youth water summits, aquatic invasive species monitoring, boater safety courses, and fishing tournaments. MLR supports these efforts by providing access to Project WET curriculum, offering training opportunities, and giving technical assistance to help volunteers and educators deliver high-quality, age-appropriate programming.
