MAY 2025 – Never Release!

Being a Responsible buyer helps protect our lakes and rivers!

  1. Avoid Releasing Non-Native Species
    • Never release non-native plants or animals into the wild. This includes aquarium pets, bait, or garden plants.
    • Dispose of unwanted species by sealing them in a plastic bag and placing them in the trash.
    • For non-prohibited species, consider returning them to the retailer, donating them to schools or hobbyist groups, or participating in surrender events.
  2. Make Informed Purchases
    • Educate yourself about invasive species and noxious weeds. The DNR provides resources to help identify these organisms across various trades, including horticulture, pet and aquarium, food, bait, and educational supplies.
    • Refrain from purchasing species classified as prohibited invasive species or noxious weeds.
    • If you possess regulated invasive species, ensure they are securely contained to prevent accidental release.
  3. Report Sightings
    • If you encounter a species you suspect to be invasive, report it to the DNR. Early detection is vital for effective management and control.
