MAY 2025 – Never Release!

Don’t Let It Loose

Never release aquarium pets, plants, bait, or any non-native species into Minnesota lakes, rivers, or woods. Even if it seems harmless, these species can harm the waters we love. If you can no longer care for a pet or plant, seal it in a plastic bag and place it in the trash. For non-prohibited species, return them to the retailer, donate them to a school or hobbyist group, or bring them to a surrender event. Learn which species are invasive or noxious in Minnesota before buying, and keep regulated species contained to prevent accidental escapes.

Clean, Drain, Dry

Before leaving a lake or river, clean your boat, trailer, and gear by removing all aquatic plants, animals, and mud. Drain all water from bilges, live wells, bait containers, and motors. Dry your equipment for at least five days before visiting another waterbody, or use high-pressure, hot water if you need to use it sooner. This simple habit helps protect Minnesota’s lakes and rivers by preventing the spread of invasive species.

Report Invasive Species

Keep an eye out for unusual plants and animals while enjoying Minnesota’s lakes and outdoors. Early detection helps stop invasive species before they spread. If you think you’ve found an invasive species, take clear photos, record the location, and report it to the Minnesota DNR (using their website or contacting your local office). Your vigilance helps protect Minnesota’s waters, lake by lake.
