Lakeshore residents’ perspectives about aquatic invasive species management

Minnesota’s lakeshore communities are acutely aware of the threat aquatic invasive species (AIS) pose to the native ecology and the cultural enjoyment of our lakes and rivers. AIS is a recurring topic at lake association meetings, where members are actively managing infested waters, mobilizing volunteers, and sharing practical prevention strategies to protect their waters from invaders.

A recent survey from the University of Minnesota’s Center for Changing Landscapes, underscores just how deeply AIS concerns are rooted in these communities, revealing the toll on their confidence and identifying who they trust most for reliable information:

This survey underscores the critical role of organizations that utilize scientific research as the foundation for their policy. With 88% of respondents trusting MLR for information on AIS—second only to the University of Minnesota—this trust is vital as we work to build the civic infrastructure needed to protect Minnesota’s lake heritage, lake by lake. The survey also confirmed that AIS awareness and responsibility are prominent among lakeshore owners, with 72% recognizing AIS as a severe problem and 86% having discussed the issue in the past year.

Yet, only 29% feel confident in their personal ability to combat AIS, with even fewer trusting in their community’s collective power. MLR is dedicated to bridging this confidence gap by providing research-backed, practical guidance, fostering community collaboration, and advocating for policies that help fund AIS management.

Our approach is clear:

  • Education and Training: Simplifying and encouraging AIS management for lakeshore residents.
  • Community Collaboration: Encouraging joint efforts to share knowledge and resources.
  • Support and Resources: Making effective action more practical and accessible.
  • Advocacy and Policy Support: Promoting policies that bolster local AIS management.

Programs like Stop Starry Stonewort and the Aquatic Invasive Species Boundary Waters Collaborative (ABC) exemplify how we drive local engagement to improve prevention strategies on a lake-by-lake basis. By leveraging science to guide our solutions, these initiatives not only protect our waters but also empower lakeshore residents to take confident, informed action against aquatic invaders.

With over 30 years of experience, we have demonstrated that mobilizing resources and implementing scientifically grounded solutions is effective. As we continue our work, MLR remains your trusted advisor, keeping you informed and equipped in the fight against AIS to preserve and protect our lakes and rivers.
